A Strange Meeting

the front door again. Willard Temple was on the steps, looking around in confusion.

“Ah, there you are.”

“No one answered,” Jupiter said, “so we went to look for another door.”

“I was in the back of the house getting instructions from my uncle. Come in.”

The short, slender nephew of old Jarvis Temple led them along a wide Victorian entry hall shining with a polished parquet floor, and through sliding doors into a large, formal living room with ugly old-fashioned furniture. Willard Temple was again dressed in a conservative dark suit. He smiled stiffly at the boys.

“My uncle isn’t feeling very strong today, boys, so he’s decided to rest. He asked me to discuss the possibility of your working for him to secure the return of the eagle.”

“Actually,” Bob said, “we’re already on the case. We’re working with Paul to catch the window smasher, and that’s the same thing.”

“Of course,” Willard Temple said. “I’d forgotten that.”

“Still,” Jupiter put in quickly, “I don’t see any reason we can’t try to find your eagle as well. It might help us catch the smasher if we knew where the coin could be sold and who would buy it.”

“Gosh,” Pete said, “wouldn’t it be real hard to sell? I mean, everyone knows all about it, right? Everyone would know it was stolen. So who’d want to buy it?”

“Collectors can be unscrupulous, Second,” Jupiter said. “Most wouldn’t touch the coin, of course, but there are some who would want it under any circumstances. Just to own it, to look at in private — never even letting anyone know they had it.”

Willard Temple nodded. “He’s right, boys. There are few such collectors, but some of them are among the wealthiest and could pay almost any price. As for where the coin might be sold, there are always some disreputable dealers to accommodate such collectors.”

“Still,” Jupiter said, “it would be difficult. The thief would have to know how to contact an unscrupulous dealer or collector.”

“Very difficult,” Willard Temple agreed. “He’d have to be quite familiar with the entire world of coin collecting.”

“Perhaps you could tell us who some of these illegal dealers are,” Jupiter said, “so we could watch them.”

“Me?” Young Temple shook his head, running his fingers nervously through his light brown hair. “No, I’m afraid I can’t tell you much about the coin world. I’ve never been able to get very interested in my uncle’s hobby.”

“Then we’ll have to ask him,” Jupiter said.
